The goal of this classic game of strategy is to remove as many marbles as possible so that only one marble remains, by "jumping" one marble over another, either horizontally or vertically. While the rules are simple, the game has stumped its players for centuries. Legend says that Solitaire was invented to entertain Louis XIV, "The Sun King" who ruled from 1643 to 1715. A French engraving dating from 1697 shows Princess de Soubise playing the very fashionable game.
